Mourinho: "We've done very well so far this season"

"I have faith in those of my men who have played less because they've given me reasons to so far"

Jose Mourinho talked to the press the day before facing Ponferradina at the Bernabeu in the return leg of the Copa del Rey Round of 32.

"The result we earned in the first leg is good, but not definitive. The tie will be left wide open if Ponferradina score first tomorrow and, if their motivation was high at their stadium, I presume it will be even higher at the Bernabeu. They are a quality side that can complicate things for us. I have faith in those of my men who have played less because they've given me reasons to so far. It's not that the others need to rest; these men deserve to play too."

"It's difficult to evaluate at the end of the actual year in football because the new year comes half-way through the season. We've done a good job so far. We top the league table, we've won our six games in the Champions League and also our only match so far in the Copa. We've had six very good months. In another league championship this Real Madrid would easily win the title."

"The most important thing about Benzema is his collaboration and contribution to the team. We've reached an agreement by which we deem it more important for Higuian to have two extra days off because it will make it easier for him to return home. It's easier for Karim to return to France. Higuain played the first leg and the collaboration between both players is good both for the team and for them. They are both scoring goals and collaborating for the team. What matters is that they both feel useful. The competition amongst them is good for us and for them."

"There will be a break for a week, but I'd rather we played because I like giving people what they want. People who love football would like to see the sport being played in the holiday season. The players are artists that give people the show they want. But we adapt to the situation with ease and the players' families also deserve to spend a special week with them. We will train again on 29 December."

"We have 21 outfield players on the squad and I decide who plays depending on the moment, the shape each player is in, the injuries, etc. All my men are healthy and my option is currently to use Xabi Alonso and Lass in midfield because they are doing a very good job. Granero has to keep working. He will play tomorrow; he'll get his chance. He always gives a serious performance, showcasing drive and personality. He is also a Madridista and I expect him to play a serious game."

"It's sometimes important to surprise your opponents. Sevilla expected a different game and another positional number '10' like Kaka and Ozil. They are my number '10s' unless I decide to use someone else due to the nature of the game. Playing Di Maria paid off and both Kaka and Ozil are as happy as those who played the game."

"We must play our matches and only focus on Barcelona when we must face them. We've taken more points in La Liga in all of 2011 than any other side and we've had the best run in the history of the Champions League group stage. We also won the Copa del Rey. Barcelona are a very good team and a direct opponent in every championship we play. I wish to congratulate them for the title they recently won, although I believe winning the Champions League is more impoprtant."

SANTOS-FCB: Legendary Barça (0-4)

Barça proclaimed world champions after an historic four goal victory over Santos in Japan

The Catalans were three up at half time after goals from Messi, Xavi and Cesc, with the Argentinean rounding the game off with a fourth after the break

Legendary status is ever closer for this Barça team, who brilliantly saw off the threat from a Santos team led by Neymar and themselves aiming to emulate Pele's great team of the 60s. Goals from Messi (2), Xavi and Cesc gave Guradiola his 13th title in charge of a team which was packed with graduates from La Masia and gave yet another masterful performance in its own unique style.

'O'Rei' Messi

With nine home grown players in the team, Guardiola again started with a back three, packing the midfield and using Alves as an auxiliary winger. The team dominated from the start with Messi, who inspired the attack, seeing an early effort stopped by Cabral(who also saved the follow up from Thiago), before opening the scoring on 17 minutes after a magic piece of control from Xavi set up the world's best player to stroke home with a beautiful touch.

Magnificent Xavi

Barça were purring now and their quick passing and movement left Santos helpless as they continued to create chances almost at will. Xavi got the second with another piece of spectacular control after a pass from Alves and the Catalan midfielder, who seemed to be in complete control of the game, then set up Cesc, whose shot came back off the woodwork. Santos were then forced into a change in tactics as they tried to halt the waves of attack from Guardiola's men.

Collective brilliance

However, no change in their opponents' tactics was going to stop this Barça and Guardiola's side continued to find space easily, rounding off the half with a third from Cesc. Barça had had a total of 74% of possession in the first magnificent 45 minutes and at the start of the second half, they showed there was not likely to be too much of a let up, with Cesc coming close to making it four, only being denied by another fine stop by Cabral. Santos showed some signs of life though, with Borges and Neymar getting through and forcing Valdes into two good one on one saves.

Wonderful collective performance

Barça were playing without any recognised out and out strikers, but were enjoying themselves with some emblematic passing and control and that nearly converted into another goal on 79 minutes when Alves rattled the woodwork and the Brazilian, who was very active throughout the game, set up the fourth goal, winning the ball back before slipping it to Man of the Match Messi to round the keeper and slot home. That was a fitting end to a great performance that saw Barça take their second Club World Cup and, amazingly, their 13th title in just three and a half years, stats that merely confirm their legendary status.

Mourinho: "Not having to recover points is what motivates us for the rest of the season"

"We're prepared to play a difficult game; the match in Seville will be the last league encounter of 2011 and a perfect example of how complicated our calendar is"

Jose Mourinho talked to the press the day before facing Sevilla at the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

"We're prepared to play a difficult game. We've had a tough calendar in the last few months. No other team has played as many games as us, and against such strong opponents too. We'll face one of the toughest teams in La Liga at a difficult venue."

"We finished last season two points behind the leaders and this year we can have a three or one-point cushion over the runners-up, or even the same number of points, practically by the middle of the championship. Any of these three scenarios is better than last year's, and it motivates us for the remainder of the season because we don't have to recover points."

"In football it's better to do an analysis at the end of a season rather than at the end of a year. Russia is the only country in which the football season runs the same course as the actual year. I think we've had a good run. I'd say our grade should be close to a 10 because we're currently co-leaders in La Liga, we've won all our Champions League games and we've also won the only Copa del Rey encounter we've played so far. We have to try to become sole leaders on the league table tomorrow."

"Arbeloa made the squad list against Barcelona because he was ready to play 15, 20 or 25 minutes if the team needed him. I'd rather have a player on the bench who can do a lot for me in little time than one who can't. Di Maria is ready to play. He was suspended on Tuesday and returned yesterday to train with a fitness trainer. He's rested as much as possible and has time to train and rest some more today."

"I will only talk about the Champions League in February in the pre-match press conference. The draw took place today and we'll have time enough to think about our match with CSKA Moscow. They've made it to this round because they took enough points in the previous rounds. The match is still two months away."

"It's normal to hear names because the winter transfer window is opening and some people are interested in buying and selling players. Our intention is still to finish the season with this squad."

"Throughout my career serious injuries have always made me sad regardless of who suffers them and the team they play for. It's the same with Villa: I'm very sorry for his injury."

Florentino Perez: "Signing Mourinho is one of the best decisions I've made as President"

The Real Madrid Premier oversaw the traditional Christmas luncheon with members of the media

Realmadrid.com / Translation by Michael J. O'Donnell
Dozens of media professionals attended the Christmas luncheon organised by Real Madrid this afternoon in the Presidential Balcony of the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

"I wish health and happiness to all, and that the financial stress that currently affects society ends this year."

"This year, the team has improved considerably. We were runners-up in La Liga and were the top scorers in the championship. We reached the Champions League semifinals for the first time in eight years. Cristiano Ronaldo won the Golden Boot award and was the all-time greatest top scorer in La Liga; Casillas received the Golden Glove; Mourinho won the FIFA World Football Coach of the Year 2010 award; and we won the Copa del Rey final. It was an historic match in which Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winning strike and many regard it as the best final in the tournament's history. All Madridistas were looking forward to winning the trophy. One of the best decisions I've made as President was to sign Jose Mourinho. Besides his great merits, he's proven to never give up, regardless of the magnitude of the challenge. He stimulates us and makes us stronger."

"In basketball, we reached the Final Four in the Euroleague for the first time in 15 years. This club is increasingly stronger. The roster is doing a great job and is on the right path."

"I see many familiar faces here, which is always a good sign. It means this is a moment to reflect on the year that now ends and hope for the best in the new year. I wish to thank all of you who follow Real Madrid, even to those who don't like us; you all help us be better."

Mourinho: "I wouldn't swap the situation we're in with anyone"

"Real Madrid's recent history has seen the team struggle against teams from other divisions and the match against Ponferradina will most likely be complicated"

Diego Jabalquinto / Translation by Michael J. O'Donnel
Jose Mourinho addressed the media the day before facing Ponferradina in the first leg of the Copa del Rey Round of 32.

"We said neither winning against Barcelona and having a 6-point cushion, nor losing and being tied in points, would make us lose our calm. Winning makes you happier than being defeated, but that's different to losing balance. I wouldn't swap the situation we're in with anyone's: we're the best team in the history of the Champions League group stage and no other side has as many points as us in La Liga, having played one less game in the competition. There are only three possibilities for us: we either draw in points with Barcelona, or top the table with a one or three-point cushion over them. I wouldn't exchange that with anybody."

"We're all in the same situation in the Copa del Rey, while in La Liga we have an advantage over every side save those who've played one more game. The 32 teams in the Copa have the same chances of winning the title. These championships are different. I understand the motivation of our opponent tomorrow will be greater, but we'll have to try to bring them down having a performance like the one we gave in Murcia last year. We played a serious game then and drew the clash, experiencing many difficulties with many of our regular starters. Real Madrid's recent history has seen the team struggle against teams from lower divisions, just like other First Division teams have. The match against Ponferradina will most likely be complicated."

"Fabio faced Ajax and Barcelona and won't play tomorrow. The same goes for Alonso and Benzema. Di Maria is suspended. But we'll have Cristiano, Ramos... and footballers who have to play. We'll have a team capable of at least earning a result that gives us the chance to seal the round at home, if not of sentencing the tie right away. I haven't seen most of the men who played on Saturday. They've had yesterday and today off because they are extremely hard and serious workers. Those on my squad list are ready."

"Arbeloa wasn't fit on Saturday, but was on the bench anyway because I felt he'd be delighted to give me 20 or 25 minutes if needed. But he's not ready to play, although he's getting better and I believe he'll play one of the other two remaining games left before Christmas. I hope he fully recovers from the problem he's had since he returned from Costa Rica."

"Varane, Altintop and Sahin will be starters tomorrow due to necessity. With each new day I increasingly feel Varane will be a starter at Real Madrid in the next 10 years. He is a great player and only 18 years old; it seems we sometimes forget just how mature he is both personally and in football. The other two need to play because they recently recovered from injuries. Every minute is crucial to them. They'll play."

"I'm motivated to see my name next to Miguel Muñoz's as the only ones in history to have 15 straight victories with Real Madrid. Of course it motivates me. We're leaders in the Champions League and co-leaders in La Liga. This is such a great and successful club... It's won so many titles and has such dimension that every defeat seems to be a problem. The fault lies with the incredible dimension this club has on a social level. But I'd rather lose our last game and be leaders with the chance of becoming sole leaders next Saturday. I wouldn't swap my place with anyone's."

"I only spoke to my players for five minutes before training. I explained to all of them, including those who will make their debut in the Copa del Rey, the history of this club in the competition and the problems other First Division sides have experienced against teams from lower divisions. I wanted them to know just how difficult tomorrow's game will be."

"Our match against Sevilla will also be very difficult. We've had an extremely difficult run in November and December: we played the derby at home, the Clasico also at home, travelled to Valencia and Gijon... These two months have been tougher on us than on anyone else, but our main objective still lies ahead. We'll be sole leaders if we win in Seville, and it would be good to achieve that at this stage. We'd be leaders if we only took one point."

REACTION: A GOOD WEEK

Posted on: Tue 13 Dec 2011

He billed it as a game his team could not afford to lose and thanks to goals from Raul Meireles and Frank Lampard, Andre-Villas was able to speak afterwards about a win over Man City and a narrowed gap to the top.

A victory against the leaders who had reached December without suffering a league defeat would have been a morale-booster on its own, but coming after wins away at Newcastle and at home to Valencia when the pressure was on, it is a very healthy sign for the weeks ahead.

As he had done after the Champions League victory six days earlier, the manager was again praising his players' mental fortitude.

'Going 1-0 down so early in the game made things very difficult because it gave Man City even more motivation and belief,' Villas-Boas said. He had seen his players concede after less than two minutes.

'So it was good strength of character and resilience shown once again to make it 1-1. In the second half both teams were trying to find a single mistake that would change the nature of the result and we did very well to find that detail. We grew in terms of motivation, we pushed the league leaders back into their low block and we were creating opportunities. It paid off for us.

'It was a bad run of results that needed a change and we got the change in the most massive games that we had to face. The players deserve credit for going past this period.'

Raul Meireles had levelled the scores before half-time and the details that made the difference between one and three points won the minute were Daniel Sturridge forcing a handball out of Joleon Lescott and substitute Frank Lampard netting a penalty. It was a big moment for a player who had missed one in his last outing at Newcastle and in a Carling Cup shoot-out earlier in the campaign.

'We had assigned Didier Drogba and Juan Mata to penalties,' Villas-Boas revealed, 'but Lamps has always been a penalty taker and he spoke to Mata and was feeling confident to take it. Mata gave him the chance and we are happy that he put it into the back of the net.'

Man City boss Roberto Mancini was unhappy his side had missed out on a penalty in the first half when David Silva went down under challenge from Jose Bosingwa.

'There might have been contact but we have been having our decisions that have not been going our way,' said the Chelsea manager. 'Today maybe it didn't go Man City's way but that is the nature of the game and at least our penalty was a blatant.'

He is pleased with the way his team is currently defending.

'We have reached a zone of comfort with a medium block and the players feel well with it. We have adapted to less space between our lines and we have been doing it quite well.

'It has been a good week and seven points behind in this league with so many teams competing for the title is nothing. Man City play Arsenal in the next couple of weeks and we play Tottenham and for our title challenge to stay alive we have to continue to be competent throughout December. To shorten it to seven points is good for us but we must continue to perform.'

Contrary to a newspaper story, the Chelsea players did not make a beeline for the manager when they found the net and nor were they under orders to do so.

'I would never ask my players to come and celebrate a goal with me,' Villas-Boas stated.

'Goal celebrations are for the players. I told The Sun that they should get the money back from their informant because it is incorrect.

'What was said to the players is that when they score a goal, they can see that the bench is going through the same emotions as them. It is very unfair that the story was poorly portrayed in that way.'

Boss thrilled with wing kings

10/12/2011 17:50, Report by Adam Marshall

Sir Alex was delighted with United's width in the 4-1 defeat of Wolves as Nani and Antonio Valencia produced outstanding individual performances.

The two wingers led the visiting defence a merry dance and their positivity from the outset enabled the champions to dominate and create a host of chances. Nani scored twice himself with Wayne Rooney also back amongst the goals with a double.

After the disappointment in Basel, it was important for the Reds to respond in the right way and the manager had no complaints about his players.

"We were pleased with that," he told MUTV. "On Wednesday, we worked our socks off and didn’t get a break. Today we worked our socks off and we did get a break. Some of the football was fantastic and obviously getting the second goal relaxed everyone. I know Wolves scored just after half-time but they deserved that because they keep crossing the ball into the box and they’re a real threat from those crosses.

"I thought the wide positions were a problem for Wolves today. I think we kept their full-backs completely occupied all through the game – we were getting to the edge of their box all the time. Goals are what we’re about. Although our goal tally was very good up until a few weeks ago, today was a fillip in terms of pushing us on a bit. The crowd got right behind the players today, particularly the young ones and that was good.

"In the main, our attacking play was terrific. We could have scored a lot of goals today and that’s pleasing. They were all disappointed after Wednesday. The young players hadn’t experienced a bad defeat before so it was a good thing for them."

Sir Alex will be keeping an eye on City's game on Monday against Chelsea as the gap at the top is down to two points.

"We always hope that [we put pressure on City]," he added. "But I think the important thing is to get our own game right. If we get to New Year’s Day and we’re in the frame we have a great chance in the second half of the season."

Real Madrid 1-3 Barcelona

Barça win the Clasico; both teams are co-leaders, but Mourinho's side has played one less game and has a chance to be sole leader by winning or drawing against Sevilla next week.

It is said small details decide the outcome of Clasicos and tonight was a clear example of that. Three instances could tip the scales one way or the other. The first was Benzema's goal only 23 seconds into the game, capitalasing from a mistake by Valdes. The second was Barcelona's second strike, which came from a shot from outside the box that went into the back of the net after being accidentally deflected by Marcelo and the far post. The third instance was Cristiano Ronaldo's missed header that could have drawn the match 2-2. This was followed by the effort that resulted in Barcelona's third goal. That was the Clasico in a nutshell. The visiting side made better use of three defining instances, but the Whites nevertheless continue to depend on themselves and could be sole leaders on the table by defeating or drawing against Sevilla next week.

Following last week's suspension, Xabi Alonso made the starting lineup and Coentrao was positioned as right back. Lass made the midfield, leaving Khedira on the bench. The game couldn't have had a more auspicious start for the locals, with Benzema scoring only 23 seconds into the game by capitalising on a mistake by Valdes, who gave the ball to Di Maria in a bad clearance. The Argentine then passed it to Ozil, who shot on target, but ended up hitting Busquets instead. The deflection was then taken up by Benzema, who scored the fastest goal in the history of the Clasico. Real started to dominate the match due to this being a harsh blow on Guardiola's side, but Barça gradually started to have more possession and scored the equaliser from a fast effort finished off by Alexis (29'). The game evened out until half-time.

The second half started with a key effort: Xavi hit the ball outside the box and the shot, which didn't seem dangerous at first, hit Marcelo and a post before entering the goal (52'). Real Madrid were forced to make a comeback and focused on attacking, leaving their goal wide open. This gave way to Barcelona counterattacks. Mourinho then made Khedira and Kaka come on for Lass and Ozil.

Cristiano Ronaldo came close to netting the equaliser from a missed header on the 64-minute mark. Football then showed its cruelest face to Real by rewarding Barcelona with another strike when Fabregas headed in an Alves cross. The fans continued to support the team to the death despite the goal and showed how very proud they are of Mourinho's side.

Kaka came close to cutting distances short in the 83rd minute, but Valdes cleared his shot with a great save. Madrid kept trying to score any way they could, but Barcelona snatched the victory in the end. The Whites will now focus on Tuesday's Copa del Rey match against Ponferradina.
